Should i buy an Iphone 3g or a TomTom Gps?

My birthday is coming up *19 yay!* and my options are to get an iphone or a TomTom system. now normally i would just pick the iphone, but i have a question regarding the Gps on the iphone. does it have spoken directions? and which do you think is better?

I'm not liking this trend towards yakking at the iPhone via Siri.

Again, I was with someone who kept demanding that Siri tell him a joke. "Tell me a joke! Tell me a joke," he snapped. It is ridiculous to an extreme.

That said, we should note that none of this is new. IBM has wanted a human-centric interface with its machines for decades. You know, just like the Star Trek computer. "Working, working."

I've joked about this in the past, suggesting that it would be terrible if voice recognition and talking computers ever took over the office environment. I want someone typing commands into the machine, not barking orders.

The thing that gets me about Siri is that it only kind of works, but everyone thinks it works well. It does not work well. Well, let me qualify that. If you are a person who lives with a cat that refuses to obey any suggestion whatsoever, then yes, it's amazing. Smarter than a cat! Or at least more obedient.

That's not that big of a deal. But now I'm afraid this is going to be a short-term trend, like the appearance of handwriting recognition during the Newton era. For about five years, everyone was all gah-gah over handwriting recognition and, to a lesser degree, over voice recognition. It eventually became so impractical that all the research went underground where it remained until recently.
