How do you save music from an Apple formated ipod when reformatting to a PC?

I had an apple computer and now i have a Dell.
I want to update my ipod but it says that i need to reformat the ipod and will lose all data. Is there any way to get around this? Any converters or tricks?

indianactressbz I recently purchased a classic ipod 3g (model with buttons between screen and wheel) as a back up for my ipod touch. I havent received it in the mail yet and then it hit me it might not be compatible if the last guy used windows (im a mac guy). Will I just have to reformat it or will it not be compatible ?
