CEDIA EXPO 2011 Diary: Day 1

The show floor at CEDIA Expo has been open for half a day, and a few themes are appearing. First of all, the show seems rather quiet. But maybe things will pick in the next day or two.

There are certainly lots of interesting products, not just for custom installers, but for mainstream entertainment consumers and dealers.

Projectors

For the custom home-theatre market, projectors with 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) look like they'll be an important product theme. At their respective press conferences, Sony and JVC announced 4K projectors.

JVC's new 4K projos use 2K (1,920 x 1,080p) D-ILA imagers, supplemented by E-shift technology co-developed by JVC and the Japanese broadcaster NHK. E-shift upconverts 1080p images to 4K, and shifts the image vertically and horizontally by a half-pixel to show the extra pixels. The result is a 4K image.

Two identical flagship models (Procision DLA-X90R, shown at top of story, and Reference DLA-RS65) will be available in November for US$11,995. They achieve native (not dynamic) contrast ratio of 120,000:1, have pending THX 3D certification, and come with 3D active-shutter glasses and 3D emitter. JVC's demo of this product looked stunning. The DLA-X70R and DLA-RS55 have native contrast ratio of 80,000:1. They'll be available in November for US$7,995; 3D glasses are extra.
